DIY Home Spa Treatments

By Racquel Quieta

Being busy is often the reason why most people don't have time to pamper themselves or address some of their health and beauty concerns.

But, now that everyone's been advised to stay at home to avoid getting infected with the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), many suddenly find themselves having lots of time in their hands. Hence, they finally have time for that well-deserved pampering.

However, since most areas are placed under community quarantine, there's no spa or salon open to serve you. So, your only choice now is to pamper yourselves at home for the rest of the extended community quarantine (ECQ).

Here are some DIY spa treatments you can do at home using natural ingredients or products that are readily available in your house.

1) Facial scrub (Honey and brown sugar)

Honey is said to contain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is also believed to be helpful in preventing and healing acne. Brown sugar, on the other hand, is perfect as an exfoliator because it is softer than regular sugar and can effectively scrub away dead skin cells on your face.

All you need for this all-natural and inexpensive facial scrub are 1-tablespoon raw honey and 1-tablespoon brown sugar. Mix them well together in a bowl then store in an airtight container at room temperature.

2) Lip Scrub (White sugar and petroleum jelly)

The lips can get dry and flaky because of the weather. The UV rays from the sun during summer and the cold weather during the rainy season can both cause dryness on your lips. Plus, there are other factors that can cause chapped lips, such as excessive lip licking, allergies, infections, and vitamin deficiency.

So, how do you get rid of dry lips? Simply put a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly on your palm and sprinkle a little bit of white sugar in it. These two are perfect together since the petroleum jelly will act as the lubricant to prevent your skin from tearing, while the white sugar -which doesn't dissolve in petroleum jelly-- will act as the exfoliator.

4) Hair treatment (Honey and olive oil)

Honey and olive oil may be known as ingredients to many scrumptious dishes, but they also have a good reputation when it comes to skin and hair care.

According to the National Honey Board, honey attracts and holds moisture. While olive oil is said to contain nutrients that can inhibit and kill bacteria. Together, they're good for cleansing and moisturizing.

Mix ½ cup honey and ¼ cup olive oil. You can warm the mixture in a microwave for 15 seconds if you feel it is needed. Apply a small amount of the mixture into damp hair and work your way through the strands, down to the tips. Wrap your hair with a towel or a shower cap and leave the mixture on for 30 minutes. Wash your hair thoroughly afterward and let it dry naturally.

5) Milk bath (Milk and honey)

Legend has it that Cleopatra -deemed as one of the smartest and most beautiful female leaders to have ever lived-- loves taking milk baths infused with honey and herbs. Milk is actually a good moisturizer because the lactic acid in it leaves the skin feeling silky smooth. Plus, taking milk baths can be soothing for those with eczema or psoriasis.

So, if you want to recreate Cleopatra's milk bath, you'll need one to two cups of milk and ½ cup of honey. Mix them together and make sure the honey dissolves in the milk. Fill your bathtub with warm water and pour the mixture in it. Make sure the water is not hot, as that would destroy the beneficial properties of the honey.

6) Eye treatment (Cucumber or tea bags)

While you soak in your milk bath, you can also soothe your tired and puffy eyes by placing round cucumber slices or cooled tea bags on top of your closed eyelids for ten minutes.

Cucumber has an anti-inflammatory property that reduces swelling or puffiness, and its high water content hydrates the skin. Moreover, it has antioxidants and silica that can help lighten the skin around the eyes.

Herbal teas are known to be calming and soothing. Plus, black and green teas contain antioxidants called flavonoids and tannins that have an anti-inflammatory effects.

7) Foot soak (Mouthwash and vinegar)

You read that right. You can use your mouthwash and the white vinegar in your kitchen to make a homemade foot soak.

Mouthwash brands like Listerine contain Thymol, an ingredient that can effectively kill some bacteria and fungi. And, vinegar is also known to have antibacterial properties. So both of them can rid your feet of germs while preparing your skin for exfoliation.

To create this DIY foot soak, simply mix together one cup of mouthwash, one cup of vinegar, and warm water that's enough to cover the top of your feet. Opt for clear mouthwash as some have reported experiencing temporary skin discoloration using the blue-colored ones.

With these DIY at-home spa treatments, you can finally have that relaxing me-time you've been craving for so long, right at the comfort of your own home and without spending a fortune on treatments. So, go ahead and try these home spa hacks, so you can emerge from the quarantine feeling rejuvenated.
